Portugal isn’t just another destination I recommend.

It is one I return to repeatedly, and one that is personal to me. With my family originating from there and with many trips over the years, I’ve experienced the country both as a visitor and as a local. This knowledge has shaped how I guide my clients to experience Portugal in a more meaningful way.

Here are some important tips if you are thinking of Portugal as your next European destination.

The first and most important tip: don’t rush it.

Although Portugal may look small, it offers many wonderful, distinct regions, each with its own character and vibe.  There is so much to see and do; however, I advise keeping it simple. Choose two, maybe three regions, and give yourself time to settle in.

Timing your trip also makes a big difference.

Summer is vibrant but is busy and can be very hot. Personally, I recommend late spring and early fall. The weather is still warm and beautiful, but the pace is more enjoyable. It is also easier to select great accommodations.  I was in Portugal in October 2025, and it was one of the more enjoyable times I had.

Food!! Where do I even begin?

No matter the region, I’ve consistently had incredible meals throughout Portugal. Some of the most memorable meals weren’t in well-known spots, but in small, family-run restaurants you’d never find online (and I share with clients who book with us!). There’s something special about wandering the streets, reading menus, and discovering places as you go. If locals are eating there, then you know it is a must!

One thing that always stands out to my clients and me is how welcoming Portugal is. English is widely spoken, which makes communication easier; however, making an effort to learn and use a few Portuguese words goes a long way.

Portugal invites you to slow down and be present.  If there was only one piece of advice I could give, it would be this: don’t try to check every box. Portugal isn’t a destination you finish in one trip; it’s one you return to time and time again. If you truly experience it the right way, you’ll already be thinking about when you can go back.
